Due to personal configurations your computer may have, there may be many reasons why you cannot initially bring up the Wireless Hotspot login page on your computer. Therefore we are only able to offer suggestions, not technical support until after you are able to bring up our login page. The following sheets will help guide you through the common problems connecting. If you have been through all of the following instructions and you are still unable to connect, please contact a staff member who will check the status of the Access Point.
COMMON PROBLEMS
1 - Use dynamic IP addresses
To avoid problems, your computer should be setup to dynamically acquire its IP address.
Setting Dynamic IP Address Allocation
Most computers are setup by default to use dynamic IP address allocation, however some are setup to use static IP addresses in specific environments (e.g. office). Although static settings should work at Wireless Hotspot hotspots, we recommend using dynamic settings to avoid potential problems. This document outlines procedures for Windows XP.
Windows XP
1. Click on the “start” button at the bottom left hand corner of your screen.
2. Click on the “Control Panel” icon.
3. If the Control Panel looks like the next picture, then click on “Switch to Classic View”.

4. Double-click on “Network Connections”. Please Turn Over.

5. Right-click on the icon for your wireless network connection (it may be called something different from what is shown below). Then select “Properties”.

6. In the pop-up window, check to be sure there is a checkmark in the box next to “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”. If not, click on the box so that a checkmark appears.
7. If necessary, click on “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” again, so it is highlighted. Then click on “Properties.”

8. Note down any settings from the window that appears. You may need to restore them when you return to your home/office.
9. Select “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”, then click on “OK” to accept the changes and close the window.

10. Click on “OK” in the Properties window, and close the “Network Connections” window.
2 - Turn off Windows automatic dialup connection
If you are a Windows user and often use dial-up, e.g. at home, then it may prevent you from getting the Wireless Hotspot login screen.
Disabling the Automatic Dialup Box
To successfully use the Wireless Hotspot Internet service, you’ll need to view the login page in your web browser. This is usually done by going to your home page, or entering a valid Internet web address – the login page will then load instead.
However if you are a Windows user and if you use dial-up Internet (e.g. at home), your web browser may be setup to automatically try to dial a connection – the following dialog box is normally displayed:

This will prevent you from getting the Wireless Hotspot login page.
Use the following procedure to disable this dial-up behaviour:
1. Ensure Internet Explorer is running. At the top of your browser window, click on “Tools”, select “Internet Options...”, and then click on the “Connections” tab.
2. Select “Never dial a connection” as shown in the diagram below, and click “OK”.

3. You should also check that the “Work Offline” item in the “File” menu of Internet Explorer is NOT ticked.

4. Then try to go to a valid web address, (eg www.google.com) and the Wireless Hotspot login page should appear.
5. When you want to use dial-up again, e.g. at home, you can do so by clicking “start” and selecting your dial-up connection from the “Connect To” submenu.
3 - Turn off your web browser proxy
If your web browser is configured to use a proxy, you will not be able to get the Wireless Hotspot login page.
To successfully use the Wireless Hotspot Internet service, you’ll need to ensure that the web proxy is turned OFF in your web browser.
The instructions below are for Internet Explorer running on Windows XP, although other web browsers will have similar settings – see your web browser manual for details.
For Internet Explorer, follow the following instructions:
Ensure Internet Explorer is running. At the top of your browser window, click on “Tools”, select “Internet Options...”, and then click on the “Connections” tab. Click on the “LAN Settings...” button.

Make a note of the current settings and then UNTICK all the boxes.

Click “OK” twice to enable the changes.
If you connect to your office network, e.g. with a Virtual Private Network (VPN), then you may need to restore your proxy settings if they are used on the office network – contact your office technical support for information. However, you’ll need to UNTICK them again (and disconnect from the VPN) before being able to Logout from the Wireless Hotspot service.
You should also restore your proxy settings when you have finished using the Wireless Hotspot service, so that your web browser will work correctly when you return to your home/office.
